Salam everyone!
My name is Zaina Al-Sahili. The literal meaning of my name in Arabic is "decorations," but the actual meaning is "beauty of life." I am from Ramallah, Palestine, and have lived there my whole life. Growing up in Palestine was an experience like no other. It’s a beautiful country with a rich and heartbreaking history.
From a young age, I found an interest in math and calculations, participating in local competitions and summer camps where I learned math, robotics, and programming. This sparked my interest in programming, so I took even more courses. I also loved sports as a kid. I was a gymnast and a ballerina, and later became interested in volleyball and basketball. In middle and high school, I joined my school's teams and competed in local championships. Playing sports was a great way for me to escape the screen and enjoy playing with others.
I am now a junior at BYU majoring in Computer Science with an emphasis on Data Science. I love learning different programming languages and rating which ones I like more. Despite the challenges and sleepless nights spent on projects, I still love my major. Computer Science is unique as it challenges students in ways other majors don’t. Balancing my life with activities not related to my major has been essential, as I realized the importance of taking breaks from studying.
As a CS mentor, I am excited to share my experience at BYU and in the major with other students. I have met so many people in the office who became my friends, professors who gave me great advice, and students who I could relate to. I hope to help make the office a safe, welcoming space for everyone.
I am so excited to meet you all :))
